Glossary of Layer 2 Communications Terminology

   
Admin Portal - Dashboard tab linking administration windows where you perform moves, add, changes, build phone routing configurations and more.

Instant Conferencing - Using Layer 2 Communications dashboard to instantly conference up to 10 participants.  
Agent Group - Incoming calls are sent to a queue. Agents log into the queue to take calls. Instant Messenger - Instantly send secure, short messages to buddies in your company.  
     
Binding - Attaching a phone to an IP port on an access device.

Intercom - Using Layer 2 Communications soft console to page another telephone company.

 
     
Bridged Line Appearance - An extension that is bound to one phone is duplicated (i.e. bridged) onto another phone. ISP Service - Layer 2 Communications provided hosted data services, including e-mail and web hosting, internet T1 access, managed servers and more.  
     
Bursting - A sequence of signals, noise, or interface counted as a unit in accordance with specific criterion or measure. Latency - Time for packets to get from A to B.  
     
Cat 5 - A Category of Performance for inside wire and cable systems. Various gauges supporting applications requiring a carrier frequency of up to 100 MHz. Managed T1 - Layer 2 Communications provided full T1 circuit providing unparalleled, excellent voice quality.  
     
Circuit Bonding - The joining together of multiple circuits to allow for customer redundancy and shared data services. Messages - Dashboard tab allowing you to listen to voicemails or read faxes from your PC.  
     
Click-to-Call - Using the Dashboard to call another party, from your Layer 2 Communications phone. OCN - Operating Company Number codes, also known as company codes, are assigned by NECA. The OCN is a four digit number used to identify local telecommunications providers.  
     
Collaboration - The ability to share information with a group of individuals having a common goal. PBX - Provides network services to existing PBXs, at a fraction of the cost of existing voice and internet service, while offering disaster recovery solutions.  
     
Conferencing - Joining together different participants into a voice or data conference. Quick Dial - Dashboard window allowing you to call any number from any phone via your PC.  
     
Convergence - Combining of voice, WAN and ISP Services on a single connection. Quick Launch - Dashboard icon installed in your systems tray allowing for one-click access into your dashboard.  
     
Dashboard - Your personal Layer 2 Communications message center accessed via the web. Redundancy - Having one or more ‘backup’ systems available in case of main system failure.  
     
Disaster Recovery - A generic term for all the tools and planning you need to bring your telecommunications facilities back to where there were before the disaster hit you. Remote Click to Call - Using the dashboard to call another party, from any phone.  
     
Dynamic IP - Addresses are randomly assigned at various times to your PC or IP telephone. Router - A physical device for connecting customer networks over Internet connections- an interface between two networks.
 
     
Erlang - A dimensionless unit of the average traffic intensity (occupancy) of a facility during a period of time, usually a busy hour. Scheduled Conferencing - Using Layer 2 Communications MEET tab to schedule a dial-in conference call for up to 25 participants. Voice or Data participation.  
     
Filtering - A process used in both analog and digital processing to pass one frequency band while blocking others and vice-versa. Service Office - An office of connecting or concurring carriers from which interstate communications services are furnished.  
     
Find Me - Establishes rules for sending callers to various telephones based on your defined priorities, can be selected from the Dashboard How to Reach Me setting or from the telephone. Soft Console - Real-time, company-wide view of your employee’s call activity, through your PC.  
     
Frame Relay - An access standard defined by the ITU-U- a form of packet switching- packets are in the of ‘frames’ which are variable in length. Static IP - A fixed IP address permanently assigned to you PC or IP telephone.  
     
G.711 - IT Union standard for audio encoding over IP- 64kps/channel- used with PBX. T1 - Broadband circuit, connecting customer site to the Layer 2 Communications Service Office, providing 1.544 Mb of capacity.  
     
G.729 - IT union standard for audio encoding over IP- 30kps/channel- used with PBX. Tenant - Group of customer’s employee telephone numbers company-wide, throughout all their locations.  
     
Hosting - A service of running an application on behalf of a company, as opposed to having them purchase and manage it by themselves. Unmanaged Connection - Customer provided computer communication network service for which bandwidth is not guaranteed at any time, such as Cable or DSL line.  
     
Hunt Group - Directs incoming calls to a group of users in series. PBX - Fully managed service replacing need to operate a PBX on premise, offering a cost-effective fully featured business communication solution for businesses.
