VoIP for Medium-sized Businesses

VoIP, or Voice over Internet Protocol, is fast becoming the go-to replacement for conventional landline telephones. Businesses of all shapes and sizes and in all industries must be able to  span the globe, simply by picking up the phone all of which makes the unpredictability of long distance phone charges no longer acceptable.

Cell phones, like any other disruptive technology, have  forced people to reevaluate just what their telecommunications dollar is buying. Currently cellular services typically include national, or even international, long distance at no additional charge. So why, with a conventional telephone system, are you still paying an additional charge (per minute) simply because the person you’re calling is in the next city over?

If you have to speak to an out-of-town client, it’s better to use your cell phone and not pay the long distance charges – and many offices have chosen to implement that as policy. However, the difficulty then becomes that you lose the impressive functionality of an internal telephone system.

You can’t transfer the call to another department; you can’t have someone else pick up to consult on the call; you can’t transfer to your conference system. And, let’s face it; it’s embarrassing and unprofessional to have a group of executives clustered around cellphone set on speakerphone. Your call quality and ease of communication will suffer – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
